This novel has broken me, utterly devastating, raw but powerful; moving but tender. The characters are as real as the history in it, their bravery transcends everything.
It is very easy to forget that there were really people like this. We need to remember, always, never forget.
I was especially impressed with the narrative, it transports you to the time effortlessly and straight to the brutality of war and conflict. The author is a master storyteller of epic proportions. I cannot wait to delve into more of her work.

whoever told me this is a romance novel will not see heaven. i was expecting a story about love transcending war like some kind of IDIOT and i ended up getting exactly that but in a completely different way than i was prepared for and now that ive finished it i feel like a piece of my soul is missing

I can tell why this novel is one of Kristin Hannah’s most popular. It was refreshing to read about WWII and the holocaust from a woman’s perspective; there was a passage at the end that really touched me when the narrator was talking about the different ways men and women confront memories of tragedy and trauma. Kristin Hannah loves to explore oppositional, familial relationships as well as internal vs. external conflict. I was especially invested in Herr Beck’s character and have a million questions about his morals and motives! I admire that she demonstrates both sisters’ strengths in different ways. The ending had a very satisfying full circle moment.

This book reminded me so much of Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. This heartbreaking time period and the stories that come out of it are haunting and I think Kristin Hannah managed to capture that and imbue a sense of beauty in this story telling amid the horror and atrocity. This book is not easy, but it is beautiful.
