If you read lots of WWII historical fiction, you may find this to be a tad lacking in comparison to other books of this subject matter.

Whilst it took me some time to get into this, by the end I was fully invested and moved by the story. I loved the mystery of which sister had survived (it was unclear which sister it was in the present tense) and I’m so glad the author didnt play the “happy ending for everyone” which would have been unrealistic of a war novel. Women’s courage, suffering and resistance in WW2 is inspiring and deeply sad - but stories worth exploring and sharing. I felt the ended wrapped up a bit quickly and neatly. I think it would have been powerful to witness Isabelle’s death scene and more of how the characters recovered after the war. And what happened to the other resistance members?? Michelline??

What a beautiful, moving, heartbreaking, masterful book. This told the story of WW2 through the eyes of the French and was an insightful glimpse into how slowly but insidiously the Holocaust progressed. There were some scenes that were graphic and I cried a lot through the book, but the character and story arcs were immaculate. The pacing was also very smooth, despite covering long periods of time and even jumping into the future for some chapters.

The only pitfalls of this book were that it was hard to get into because it started rather slow, and it got a little preachy in its feminist messaging at times. But I truly loved this story.
