The first few pages of this book were gripping, effectively causing me to continue reading. Kristin Hannah set up a rich backdrop of war and the Holocaust, with such beautifully crafted sentences ("The stairs unfold from the ceiling like a gentleman extending his hand.")

Despite being almost 440 pages, I did not feel the length of this book. I was swept up in a story that reminded me of our humanity, frailty, and beauty as people, but especially as women. Appropriately, tears were shed. Do pick up this book, especially if you enjoyed stories set during the time of Hitler, revolving around family, courage, and survival.

I have never experienced something so powerful, or heartbreakingly beautiful.

I feel kind of bad rating this on the lower end because I think it's main crime was just being not really my thing (it was a gift). This book is impressive in it's scope. From the French soldiers going off to war to the aftermath, every moment is so detailed. I would say this book is more about creating a vivid picture of life in WWII France than it is about the plot or characters. (I did feel that the characters, and particularly their relationships to each other, were the weakest part of the book). My guess is that you will like this if you like historical fiction, because it is beautiful, engaging, and well-crafted.

The pacing was a little too slow for my taking for the majority of the book, but once you hit the climax you can’t put it down. Kristin Hannah creates yet another heart-wrenching masterpiece.

It was heavy and complicated and a beautiful story but I do not know if I can bear to read it again, nor could I have had the strength of these fictional women and so many of the real ones that conquered the darkest of days for humanity.
