Grab tissues.

The story about love found during absolute tribulation is so profound. A tale of friendship, family, survival, humble heros, and  unexpected strength during a time of disgusting tragedy. I couldn't put it down.

This book was really, really good. I loved the concept and the twists, as well as split narratives. I was happy that it was so long because I wanted to spend more time reading it. However, I didn’t like the way that it was written. Too many adjectives, lotssss of coincidences slash things that didn’t feel realistic
(like Isabelle and Gaetan meeting and falling in love in the woods. Like what??)
, also a few moments where I was like … I wish this historical fiction was more historically accurate. The characters were a little bit too much the center of the entire world/everyone fell in love with them and wanted to do what they said. It felt like a modern story where everyone was just dressed up as people from WW2 -
even the descriptions of concentration camps/SA were not heart wrenching
. The ending, however…wow. This story would’ve been a five for me if it focused on Vianne, cut the romance, and had a more historically accurate description. Too fluffy, but perfect example of how a moving book that I enjoyed reading (aka, I sobbed) doesn’t have to be a five star.

This book broke my heart and wrapped me up in the hug I didn't know I needed. It is gut wrenching as the other reviews have mentioned but I see why so many people recommend this book. As cliche as it sounds, I couldn't put it down. I was reading Iron Flame and pushed that to the side once I started reading this. I learned, I loved, my jaw hit the floor. I will tell everyone about this book. You must read it!

This is the first book in a long time that made me cry. It is slower paced in my opinion, but so so worth it.

“If I have learned anything in this long life of mine, it is this: in love we find out who we want to be; in war we find out who we are.”

i am writing this review with tears in my eyes. this book had been on my TBR for so long and i can’t believe i waited so long before reading it.

this is absolutely my top book of the year and will likely remain as one of the best novels i will ever read. this story is so incredibly heartbreaking yet so beautifully written. this story hit so close to home and touched and pulled at my heart strings.  i don’t understand how there are people out there who are capable of such evil. i know this story is fiction, but it is such a great reminder for all of us what happened to an entire group of people. it highlights the tragedies that millions of people faced for years during wwii. it sheds light on the sacrifices women have made in this war. sacrifices that went unnoticed. women who went through a great deal of pain and loss but won no medals. isabelle and viviane are fictional characters but they are written with real women in mind, women who scarified everything.

vianne was right when she said “women get on with it. for us it was a shadow war. there were no parades for us when it was over, no medals or mentions in history books.” this point of view is one that is never heard and i think that it is such an important part of history that should never be overlooked or forgotten.

“wounds heal. love lasts. we remain.”

A beautiful story about family, survival, fighting for what’s right, and coping with trauma.

CW: this shows the realities of living in France and of being in concentration camps during WW2. Some scenes may be triggering for some readers.
