The pacing was a little too slow for my taking for the majority of the book, but once you hit the climax you can’t put it down. Kristin Hannah creates yet another heart-wrenching masterpiece.

It was heavy and complicated and a beautiful story but I do not know if I can bear to read it again, nor could I have had the strength of these fictional women and so many of the real ones that conquered the darkest of days for humanity.

This is a 4.5 star read for me. Kristin Hannah has historically not been my favourite author so I tried to go into this story with low expectations. It started out and I remember saying to my friend, "I'm not connecting to either main character, I just don't like them". Oh man, was I wrong. This story blossoms into beautiful character development. Vianne, Isabelle, and Sophie all mature and use their resilience to transform into women who take care of themselves. Their bravery and strength are a shadow of the true bravery and strength displayed by any one and everyone affected by WWII. I really enjoyed the ending, I fell in love with the characters all over again and things were tied up very nicely. The back of the book where Kristin Hannah talks about what inspired the book was very interesting, I will definitely be checking out some of the memoirs that this story was based on!

I read this for a book club and it has been a long while since I've read anything with WW2 as a theme.

It is emotional, intense and eye opening. I'm not sure I've ever read anything from the perspective of the French women left behind as they watch France get occupied and men go off to war and Jews get taken away and this novel tells it so well.

The story follows two sisters and their relationships and their lives when War takes over and how they react. Definitely recommend it if you like historical fiction.
