I like Riordans writing a lot, but as a character Piper's not-like-other-girls attitude kind of ruined it for me. She constantly judged other girls to the point it got hard to read her chapters. I skipped the second half of the book and came back to the series to read the other 4 later and I grew to like her a lot. Not sure if the author toned down this character trait or if it just bothered me less once I was more into the plot

I’ve always had trouble with spin-offs; [b:Bloodlines|8709527|Bloodlines (Bloodlines, #1)|Richelle Mead|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1297199431s/8709527.jpg|13582374] and [b:Clockwork Angel|7171637|Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)|Cassandra Clare|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1369452257s/7171637.jpg|6674837] - which I didn’t love as much as everyone else, are a few examples. I think some stories should just end and be left alone.
The lost hero doesn’t tie up any loose ends from the previous series, nor does it introduce us many new themes or characters. The storyline is a little incoherent, and not strong enough to base an entire installment upon.
This makes it a filler book at best.

What was the point of this novel?
It’s the size of a brick - 550 pages - and barely anything happens. I ended up skimming the last 100 pages because of my impatience.
Maybe the purpose with this was to introduce us to the new characters? Wait, no. That was already done in a few chapters.
There’s nothing different about the world, no new information except for some more insight into the other cabins, which I liked.

It’s sad, because we were off to a great start. The first 200 pages were quick, entertaining and interesting. It had a similar feel to the previous series, with a more serious tone.
The new characters have a solid background. Both Leo and Piper are such sympathetic characters.
Leo brightens up the book with his humor and nearly filled Percy’s spot. Piper has an internal struggle that makes her a well-rounded character with flaws.
Jason on the other hand feels like a blank slate at this point; with very little background, I understand that it must’ve been harder to make him a relatable character. Still, he had little personality and I didn’t enjoy reading his chapters.

It all goes downhill after that.
The plot moves with the pacing of a snail. We’re basically just going from Point A to Point B, and it takes an entire book. I wish this had been a novella so we could jump straight into the plot of [b:The Son of Neptune|9520360|The Son of Neptune (The Heroes of Olympus, #2)|Rick Riordan|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1369501750s/9520360.jpg|14406312].
Just like with The last olympian, the action scenes felt like an extremely weak plot device to make sure something happened, without being necessary.

Bonus points:
* For the big reveal at the end which did manage to shock and excite me.
* For the list of all the gods mentioned in the book. It was difficult to keep track of them all, so it was very helpful and I hope this will be continued in the next books.
* Credit must be given to Riordan for trying to come up with something new and not using the exact concept twice. There is a difference between this series and PJO, however small it is.

Final verdict:
A bad start to a very hyped up spin-off. Slow pacing, half interesting plot, mildly likable characters. I might continue with the series, but I’m on the fence about it.
