This was very cute. Kingfisher does a great job keeping things light white still incorporating dark elements into her work.

This is a cute and funny book. You want to root for the two main characters, one who is an adorable but sarcastic armadillo. His relationship with Oliver, the 12 year old main character is precious. I like that
despite what the villagers did he didnt turn against them. He felt resentment,  sure but who wouldn't? He still saw them as humans and people he wanted to help. He still saw the good in them and understood their actions. I liked that despite so many people/creatures were out to get him kept trying to prevail. He wouldnt abandon his new friend despite a very real and high chance of dying. I liked seeing him grow as a character, to feel more confident in himself, to embrace the things he is good at, just as the armadillo (<3) suggested rather than fixate on what he wasn't good at. I liked that Oliver wasn't one dimensional, he was complex. I liked that he wouldnt give up his magic because that meant giving up his armadillo.
There was two main things I disliked though. One was that it sometimes randomly switched to 1st person and not in italics or just "he thought" after. That bothered me. The second was the ending. I wish we had gotten more. The main plot was resolved but I would have liked to see interactions with characters or how it all went after.

Mad at her editor who said this wasn't a kids' book. It is absolutely a kids' book. Charming enough for an adult, but I would think better for that target audience.
