The world building to this was so interesting, I loved how it all came together and how the gods were there with the humans.  Think a young adult mash up of Percy Jackson and The Hunger Games—and make it queer.

It did take me a few chapters to fully get invested in this but once I did I ended up reading twenty-two chapters in one sitting.

Obviously, I’m not a fan with how this ended but luckily I waited long enough to read this to know it ended on a major cliffhanger.  So it wasn’t quite as devastating.

I loved this audiobook and can’t wait for the second half of the duology! The characters are so lovable and complex, and the descriptions of each scene were so detailed that I could picture them easily. I would LOVE to see this story in a visual medium.

Damn I loved it so much. It was so hard to put it down and if it wasn’t for uni I would have read it in one week.
The characters are great, the mystery surrounding the trials too, the action, the ending, the relationships , TEO, everything was great in this book. But I need book two like NOW

Finally finished thisss - this was one of my most highly anticipated reads of 2022 but like so many of my most anticipated reads, I didn’t get around to reading/finishing it for months
However overall I really liked it! I wasn’t as invested or obsessed as I wanted to be but I did grow to really like a lot of the characters and I’m obcesseddd with the world building
Especially due to the plot twist right at the end I’m excited to read the second one but personally this one wasnt quite a 5 star for me unfortunately
I’m not a huge quest person in terms of it being the whole plot and need more a bit more character development than this book gave
I think because it was more plot based, it didn’t allow me for me to get as invested in the characters for most of the book
Also, because of a few of the characters characterizations as the villains we didn’t get to see much of who they really were/could be and if that was genuinely what they’re like or if they were being manipulated

The Sunbearer Trials is a wonderfully queer YA fantasy that is a perfect blend of a Mexican-mythology Percy Jackson and The Hunger Games. Packed full of lovely (and some not so lovely) characters, gorgeous world building, and incredible tension.

Every decade the island of Reino del Sol holds the Sunbearer Trials where ten semidioses (children of gods and goddesses) are chosen by Sol, the sun god and creator of life who gave up his mortal form to protect the island and keep the chaotic Obsidian gods at bay. The winner of the trials carries light and life to all of the temples, but the loser has the greatest honor of all - being sacrificed to Sol. However, this year is the most intense trials yet with two Jade semidioses, Teo and Xio, selected (which has never happened before). Throughout the book our candy loving cast of characters, Teo, Niya, and Xio must learn to navigate the challenges of the trials and the Gold semidioses including a very distracting (but handsome) ex-best friend.

This book embraces a queer world with a vast cast of trans and queer characters. We need more queer fantasy books like this, and I can’t wait for the sequel to be released.
