I loved this book on a variety of levels. I love the way that the adults carefully handle Lula's complex and sometimes conflicting emotions. I love that the boy, the son of Lula's father's girlfriend, is portrayed as gentle, kind, and very patient with Lula. I love that it portrays a Black girl that loves to be outdoors in nature. I love that it normalizes shifting relationship and family dynamics. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the underlying metaphor of building something new together, which is represented by building sandcastles at the beach, handles the complexities of building a new family well without blatantly hitting the reader over the head with it.

This is a wonderful picture book about two families making one. About a blending of families and their first vacation. This book is sentimental and lovely but simple and full of heart. And it has lovely illustrations to match.
