Great concept

but

the transphobia, lesbophobia, and overall total grotesquerie ruined any chance of this being more than 0 stars.

I also felt like there were too many characters and they weren’t really likable.

Make no mistake, this book is grim at times. There are some scenes that made me shudder in horror (

the maggots anyone

) but I really enjoyed the plot. The writing was good too and I ended up reading this in one sitting. I look forward to reading more of this author.

This book is not bad due to the writing but the transphobia, misgendering, victim blaming of characters really got me. You can absolutely tell that this was written by a man. No nuance to any of the female characters and super cliche. Wanted to like it for the premise, but just couldn’t support the content.

Considering this thriller is longer than your average it’s very easy to read due to the short chapters and multiple points of view.

The overall plot line is interesting and most of the plot twist were unexpected and enjoyable.

However, whilst I’d likely read more from this author, I probably won’t read the other books in this series.

This book was alright. I finished it quite quickly and it was definitely a page turner with regards to the plot, however the transphobic language used in parts of the book really knocked some stars off for me. I was quite taken aback seeing as this language was not challenged by other characters in the book, which made me think it was very deliberate and these could just be the author's personal views coming through, which is highly disappointing. I also feel like the DI in the book made some unrealistic and just stupid choices, especially towards the end of the book, which, as someone with a forensics/police background, only made me frustrated haha.

Overall I was intrigued on the mystery and liked the short chapters and pace. However the transphobic terms and misgendering of a character however minor made me not like the book as much.
