sunlit and full of shadows. when bad things can come at any time of the day.
i mostly got enjoyment from this because i read it in the head space of the main character in the shards (probably still my favourite read of the year though i finished it in january!) and i would suggest to read this book as quickly as possible so its rhythm can better be felt. it somehow turns into something oppressive and sticky as you go on and by the end you want to get out of there as much as clay does

I'm not sure what to think of this book. It's a pretty slow burner, but one that I did genuinely want to carry on reading to see what happens.
The 'controversy' parts of the book aren't all that controversial in todays standards. It also just kind of ended. 3 stars, but not one I'm going to read again I don't think.

This book is essentially a long list of actions, all joined together with an overuse of the word 'and'. There is no actual plot and none of the actions essentially matter. Perhaps that's the point, but it did not make for an enjoyable reading experience.

A lot less gay than I was hoping for! Still fun. Winter break in the California sun. Like Stillman’s Metropolitan, just with more coked-out teenagers without the East Coast exceptionalism.
Flashes of promise, good writing when Ellis falls into the prose of interiority. Perhaps better as one of those lazy school break films that gives you an excuse to leave the house to sit in a dark theater for 2 hours or so, which has me excited for the film adaptation.
