Excellently crafted mystery
The detectives propound multiple theories of the case, all of which hang together and all of which are wrong.
I had only gotten halfway to the solution by the time it was revealed
And none of it was preposterous or depended on far-fetched coincidence
The queer relationships were loud and proud, while constricted by the stigma of the era and complicated by the personalities of the people involved

Kind of slow, might try again not sure
What a delightful novel! Set in England between the wars, this mystery has real mystery writer Josephine Tey as a main character. But Tey is no Miss Marple; she leaves the interviews and digging to the police, observing from the periphery. The story is largely set in a London theater, whose players and management get caught up first in the murder of a young woman stepping out with a stage manager and later in the murder of another person connected with the theater. The characters are an intriguing lot, the setting and time period are interesting and the plot is spooled out piece by piece, at a good pace. Upson plays fair with the "whodunit," and the result is a satisfying read.
Not as good as Tey was, with a highly unlikely and convoluted conclusion, but an enjoyable read. Don't think I'll continue with this series.
Listened to this the second time and I still love it so much. I love Sandra Duncan's narration, all the characters are so beautifully vibrant and alive, there's romance between ladies that isn't turned into A Thing, and the case is so complex I'd forgotten how exactly it ends after over a year since listening to the book the first time.

I liked this one, but I have such a hard time keeping track of lots of characters in a mystery. I guess it's essential to the whole whodunnit plot, but whew. I really like this time period, and I will go back to this series when I need something to just give me a solid story.
