Amanda’s poems about society and race and violence were so good. A lot of them very applicable right now to fight for Palestine as well, so those felt very powerful to now have 2 social movements that I’ve lived through and participated in, to relate these poems to.
The poems about the pandemic felt a little bland in comparison.

I haven't had much experience with contemporary poetry and was relieved by how approachable and beautiful this collection was. I preordered a copy but never got around to reading it. But this week I saw that the audio was available on Libby without a wait and it seemed like the perfect thing to listen to right now. The poet tackles so much of what we've witnessed over the last few years: the pandemic, masking, the murder of George Floyd, the consequences of the 2016 election. I enjoyed listening to the author read her own work AND I'm glad that I have a physical copy to return to. Her words demand to be studied!

I've seen a few people theorize that this book might have been requested by the editor after the success of Gorman's inauguration speech and it would certainly explain how impersonal and rushed the collection felt.
However, it seems to have resonated with quite a few people and I did find enough good to make me want to explore more of their work.

I know she is a genius—I can see it-but her poetry was mostly not accessible to me.  I think I would appreciate it more if I attended a spoken word performance.
