this was SO different than what i typically read, but wow did i love it. it’s a story of friendship on a whole new level…the way the characters are so flawed honestly is what makes it hit that much harder..

the middle portion of this book was the best. by 75% i was actually shaking bc i was so shocked by what was occurring..any book that gets some emotion like that out of me is an automatic 4 stars!

the one negative i have is that it was sometimes hard to follow…the third person narrative tripped me up at times and i found myself getting confused, but it worked for the way this book was written

this book started out SO GOOD and then just went downhill…3.5

"Tell me I don't know you when I could draw both sides of this hand, from memory."

"She was pretty all the time, but she was beautiful in love."

I don't even know where to begin to describe the emotions and feelings I'm going through right now. Needless to say, I loved this book. Very few times can I care about characters and let them consume me. Those characters are: Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger in countless Dramione stories. Marianne and Connel from Normal People. Regan and Aldo from Alone With You In The Ether. Feyre and Rhys from ACOTAR. And now, I will have to add Sam and Sadie to this list. Which is CRAZY considering how different (but I guess also not?) this particular love story is. For a story about two people who are "often in love, but never lovers", this was very much a love story. In a way that is so profound and so strong (which again is CRAZY considering the basically 'platonic' nature of their friendship). As a a girl who loves video games and who lives in Silver Lake (which was the background for a good chunk of this story), it was hard to not love this book. It had everything I enjoy in a good romance, sadness, metaphors, banter, more sadness...idk..my level of articulation is just not doing this book and my feelings about it justice. I loved it so much and I will be thinking about Sadie and Sam for a long time.

i gave up reading this after the ~twist~ because all the characters were pissing me off, but actually very glad i finished it!!! zevin you redeemed yourself. also 3 different people said the cover reminded them of me and that was nice :,)

"What is a game?" Marx said. "It's tomorrow, and
tomorrow, and tomorrow. It's the possibility of infinite rebirth, infinite redemption. The idea that if you keep
playing, you could win. No loss is permanent, because
nothing is permanent, ever.”

i don’t think i can adequately describe how incredible this book is & how much it means to me, so i don’t think i’ll even try. it speaks for itself.

my favorite book i’ve read this year. absolutely perfect.

Took many turns that I didn't expect! Very well written. The characters were also beautifully developped.
