I've finished this 3 days ago and I have been in shock quite literally. The plot is going in a very complex way and I'm just going insane. There's lots of things that I don't understand and it's just very very intense.
can we please all come to the fact that I haven't even recovered from the shock that cook is the lioness and then she's f*king dead I didn't even get to cry for her just from the overall shock!!
. Laia had a very strong character development she's literally just a very good written heroine. And as always sabaa is literally torturing everyone in the book EVEN THE SIDE CHARACTERS NO ONE SURVIVES HER EVIL!! Lastly I won't even comment on the writing stlyle or plot the whole series is just a masterpiece I can't bring myself to say anything more.

4.75

I think I need to think about the rating for this one. I think I'll give it 4.75 because... the pacing is so fast, in each chapter something happens. That lovely- except in my case where I am binging the series. MY HEAD. I love how character focused it is, but there are also moments that I kinda wish would just slow down.

That being said, this is such a good action packed book. My favorite story line of the book was definitely everything that had to do with mother
finding out everything the Cook went through, and then seeing her stand for her last remaining daughter... and then Helene's sister giving birth in the middle of the war. Keris and her lack of emotion for Elias, despite having a lovely mother growing up- I loved it all.

THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING. The character development of each and every character is so complex, diverse and multi-layered. The plot-twists kept coming and coming and I never expected a single one. It was definitely the most intense, gruesome and dark out of the series but sets up the last book perfectly.  It is definitely my favorite so far into the series but each book just gets better and better and I feel like I am actually inside the Empire and living beside these characters and the crazy things that happened in this phenomenal book.

Stunning third instalment in the an ember in the Ashes quartet. Tahir's writing is brilliant and the way she constructed the changes in the POV’s meant that you could not put this book down. The Roman inspiration shines through and every twist and turn leaves you breathless. The character development and plot development were truly staggering. I cannot wait to pick up the final instalment where I know I will be an emotional wreck. But what's new?! The only slight critique I would have is that I wished the battle scenes were more detailed and drawn out as that would have truly made the tension mount.

My kingdom for Elias and Laia to be able to kiss and not be interrupted by literally every living being in the known universe every time they do so. Wow, this series does not disappoint. It is so good, so thought out, so wonderfully paced. Everything adds together and comes out in such wonderful ways. Also, I felt so vindicated when I learned the identity of Cook.

I loved how this book emphasizes how trauma compounds and multiples when not addressed among family members in communities. And the idea of when has a group atoned for their sins, or the sins of their ancestors. Is making a people suffer atonement, or is that just vengeance. There's so much here, I loved it so much.
