This an Alaskan native American legend of two old women who are abandoned by their people during a particularly hard winter. Without enough food, the elders of the tribe leave the two women, considered a burden to their community, to die. The two women that they are in fact stronger than they or anyone else believed them to be, and certainly, not ready to give up and die. This is an interesting little book with a good story and moral. It is worth reading. I also learned something about the Gwich'in band of the Athabaskan people.

Subtitled: "An Alaskan Legend of Betrayal, Courage and survival." Wallis recorded this, one of many stories told her by her mother round the fire each night. I liked that the old women took their destiny into their own hands - "if we are going to die, let us die trying." A story that teaches us the value of experience and perseverance. A wonderful story.
