I have seen these books everywhere, airports across the country, online, panels at cons. But I hadn't had a vetted recc. Least until my friend Emma, who is responsible for me even doing this stuff, was enthusiastic about me starting "Dungeon Crawler Carl" by Matt Dinniman. Currently on book 5 if that means anything.
Basic pitch, guy is gritting his ex-girlfriend's cat out of a tree and the world ends. But since he was outside he gets the option to venture into the Dungeon and participate in an intergalactic show using the remnants of Earth as contestants. And then it gets weirder.
Reasons to read:
-The meta plot has me by the throat
-Foreshadowing and plot hooks that just beg you to keep reading
-Names for things are fantastic
-As an rpg fan it scratches that itch
Cons:
-More of a dog person myself, spent more time around tigers than house cats so they are weird to me

I loved this book!
The writing style was very good, and the pacing was perfect. This book was funny, the plot was gripping, the characters were fun. It made me excited to read, which is honestly the most important thing. The only thing that felt lacking in this book was some character development, and I wished we'd gotten to know the side characters better.
My first litRPG, 4.5/5.

I’ve been avoiding picking this up again, so time to move on. And the level of violence (“meat between my toes”, head stomping, etc) is a real turn off.
