Okay I know people are always talking about this series but it is seriously worth the hype. Going into this series I really thought it was just gonna be like funny haha? I was not expecting the amount of seriousness, especially getting into the politics of the entire universe. I am SO curious as to how these series function, like I would love to have a standalone from the POV of like Zev? Or someone like Zev, just a behind the scenes type deal.
This series (so far at least) is the epitome of “team work makes the dream work” and “life is like a box of chocolates you never know what you’re gonna get”. Like poor Carl my man is getting wrecked with what he has to wear. Also I am not sure if I am the only one but I imagine Carl as Jorgen Von Strangle from My Fairly Odd Parents, sorry if that ruins anything for you lol

As a video game player, DCC truly felt like playing a video game and perfectly captures that descent into harder tasks and more craziness at each level. The narration is hilarious and the writing is vivid and crude. Whenever I thought Carl or Donut could not describe something in a more unhinged way, they did...times 10! I laughed so much. On top of that, of course, just when I thought I was only listening for the laughs, Dinniman sneaks a bit of heart into the story as well. Good time overall.

A lot of explanation of the game mechanics but picks up after that's out of the way
4.5/5 stars. this was so fun to read - i literally had to stop myself from devouring it in an entire sitting. if you're a fan of zany adventure, crude humor, and litrpg, this is your book. personally, i love progression-based games, so this was an addicting read.
minor spoilers for the first 10% of the book below.
this is the first in a series and tells the story of relatively average joe carl, who ends up traversing a dungeon while pantless and shoeless together with a talking cat. the bosses are ridiculous caricatures, the AI is extremely sassy, and some questionable moral decisions take place as well. if you're easily offended, this is not the book for you. otherwise, the pacing was great, plot was engaging, and game mechanics were well thought-out, including little snippets to look forward to in future instalments.
why this wasn't 5/5: writing is what i've come to expect from litrpg (nothing to write home about, but it gets the point across), and characters were relatively flat for now. the main character is also a bit of a typical litrpg protagonist; comes across as normal, ends up being very clever and quite strong exactly when needed. the comedy balances this out somewhat, making carl a bit less overpowered to the point where he isn't completely a gary stu, but i wouldn't come into this expecting too much in terms of character development.
overall, this was a fun read if you'd like to turn your brain off and laugh at a ridiculous, yet strangely addicting video game that you don't need to go through the effort of grinding yourself. i can't wait to crack open book two once i'm done writing this review!
