I wasn't super into this for the first half, and at some point considered dropping it. I'd seen a lot of praise but I'm familiar with litrpg and thought the praise must have been from people less aware of the genre. As the story progressed into its second half, however, the plot thickened and I got really sucked into some of the mystery elements of what exactly is going on and why. Definitely going to listen to the second book!

Overnight, Earth is transformed into a deadly, televised dungeon for the amusement of alien viewers. Carl, a former Coast Guard tech, and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, must navigate the 18-level labyrinth battling monsters, solving puzzles, and gaining popularity with the alien audience if they hope to survive.
✨I LOVED THIS SO MUCH✨
So many people have raved about this book, and I totally get it now. This is one of those books that I would put under the category of ‘absolutely not perfect, but perfect for me’. It’s silly, ridiculous, at times brazenly stupid, but holy crap, did I have a hell of a lot of fun.
There is nothing I can truly say about this book that hasn’t already been said. I laughed, I gasped, I had an amazing time. I am a video game nerd at heart, and this one spoke to me. Not sure what that says about me as a person, but hey, I am who I am 😅
Overall, I am unashamed to say I loved this book so much. I would do anything for Princess Donut despite how chaotically evil she is. If the idea of meth llamas sounds like a good time to you, or if you enjoy video games or have a bit of a nerdy side, you should probably pick this one up. Excuse me while I ignore the rest of my TBR and make this my entire personality from this point on.

This book is not my usual read but I can't stop talking about it/recommending it to people because this whole series has just been an incredible ride so far. It's funny and dark and fucked up and full of adventure.
I don't play Dungeon Crawler Games. But this books is unbelievably accessible in both the adventure and humor aspects without treating the audience like we're stupid. I honestly think there's something for everyone here and, my god, how could you hate a book where one of the main characters is a show cat named Princess Dounut the Queen Anne Chonk?
