This is the 3rd book by Bythell that I’ve read and throughly enjoyed. They are easy to dip in and out of. I like gifting these books to far more well-read people than myself, they seem to get a kick out of the references to authors and books  I’m too proud to admit out-loud that I have never heard of. But still enjoyed hearing about.

About one third in, I decided to DNF this book for now. It's not that I don't like it as such, but I decided I'm reading it in the wrong way: since the book is a written account (almost like a diary) of the going ons in the bookstore, I'm going to pick it up again when the next year has caught up with the daily entries I've read. From there on, I think I'll rejoin again, reading only a short, daily entry, 'living along' the pace of the book.

As a bookseller, I found myself nodding my head and saying so true a lot. The orders that you can't find, the ridiculous questions, the people who always want a discount. I really enjoyed this book. A great look at the secondhand book trade. I also really enjoyed the excerpts from Bits from an Old Bookshop by R.M. Williamson that are at the beginning of each new month's entries. So many things have not changed in the book world since he wrote that book in 1904. A fun quick read that shows a slice of life in Scotland and in the secondhand book trade.
