The Anglo-Saxons: A History of the Beginnings of England by Marc Morris

Highly accessible popular scientific text on the Anglo-Saxon era. The narrative angle is not purely chronological and centers on the lives of key-figures and events in stead of the highly prevalent perfunctory one-damn-fact-after-another style of so much history writing. This makes for a smooth reading/listening experience and feels like you've been dipped into a piece of living history and have come out the wiser for it.
