“Being a girl is the best,” she said, “because no one ever believes you’d do something bad. People think you’ll do nothing, which means you can do anything. I’ll show you.”

Dual timelines with two characters.

I love the elements ghosts add to a plot. This was set up in a way that they were needed to solve the mystery, which is a cool approach.

Shea is a well developed character and she had a good arc and a good ending. Beth was not likeable but she was also a victim with a terrible family and a terrible childhood.

I would have liked more ghosts.

I enjoyed this book. It had a good suspenseful presence and kept me intrigued to get to the end. The part where I have mixed feelings on was the supernatural parts. I didn’t hate that there was some but I didn’t love it either. I would recommend if you want a mystery ride with a few hills (if that makes sense)

I will likely come back to this book later, but I am just not in the mood to read it right now.

This was a fun thriller/mystery/true crime book. I was entertained, loved the paranormal elements, and really felt connected to the characters and their emotions/experiences. Overall a solid read.

I really liked Shea. She was timid yet strong, full of a secret history that really shaped who she was. Reading her character growth was amazing. It was such a well written arch. Beth was also an engaging character. Her arch, although told backwards almost in a foil to Shea’s, was equally as interesting and well done. I feel that other characters lacked something, though. They all definitely felt like side characters compared to Shea and Beth - which can be bad because some should have been more fleshed out for how important they were.

The storyline was cool! A blogger that writes about cold cases is breaking one herself? Maybe not entirely unique in this genre but still fun to read regardless. And the setting was super vivid - a perfectly cold and dark setting for this story.

My complaints are two:
1) The last 40% (excluding the last chapter) was all explanation. Sure, action occurred, but it was all just explaining to the readers the history. There were not any major twists (and if there were, they were explained in a way that did not make them exciting). The story didn’t feel so…dramatic in this way. Much more low key. Again: still had action! But it wasn’t very twisty shocking.
2) The paranormal aspect existed but wasn’t as fully formed as I wanted it to be. It existed and was a major part of the story but for me the way it ended didn’t fee paranormal enough. I was expecting a haunted house but instead got….Beetlejuice? Ghosts just existing in the same space? Like come ON. Those ghosts should have been terrorizing people.

Overall very fun and chill mystery/crime book. I enjoyed it and will read more from this author!
