The second book in the Chronicles of Kazam was fun, adorable, and not as memorable as I hoped it would be.
I greatly love Jasper Fforde's work. It's hilarious, wholesome, and often unexpected. However, I've found that I have to be in a certain mood to really appreciate it and I don't think I was quite in the right mood while I read this book. While I enjoyed many aspects of it, none of it really stuck out to me in a meaningful way. And I enjoyed the prequel much more. Perhaps I'll have to give this another read in a few years.
I'm also a little disappointed that there are so many similarities between this book and the Thursday Next books. An odd pet, a dislike for the media (and a main heroine who tries to avoid or trip them up), a will-they-won't-they sort of romance, a dutiful and well-meaning sidekick who is less experienced than the heroine, a ridiculous war that's changed lives everywhere and let's be honest - Jennifer Strange is basically just a young Thursday Next. While I loved the Thursday Next stories, I was hoping that this series would be the same brand of wonderful with a much different sort of story. While the stories are different, the basic elements of the characters and the background are the same. It's still plagiarism if you copy yourself.
That being said, I still enjoyed this book. Jennifer Strange is wonderful and I adored that the elderly wizards referred to her as "that sensible girl with the ponytail" because that describes her perfectly. Jennifer is delightful and I love the cast of characters that surround her.
This is an excellent read for fantasy lovers who want a short and easy read.
