A very enjoyable bit of sci-fi, with likeable and yet alien aliens.

I tried to like this one, but every time I picked it up, it felt like a chore. I just couldn’t get into it and none of the characters felt very real.

You have to read this!!!! I mean it!!! This book just blows your mind, grips you and leaves you on the floor weeping and wanting more. I loved the whole story and cannot get enough of this brilliant world building. It’s astounding... filled with warmth, sharp wit and rip roaring adventure. With just a soupçon of desperation and a feeling of gloom and doom on the horizon, which as always the humans ignore

It was good. Of course it was: Tchaikovsky is an experienced writer and I already know I like his efficient and witty writing style. The characters were top notch too.

And yet, I couldn't help feeling that the setting of Shards of Earth was Every Space Opera Ever. Motley scavenger crew in over their heads? Check. War with unknowable aliens? Check. Add to that a few veterans and a governmental agent just doing his job, shake it up a few times, and enjoy your cliched smoothie. A very good one, but still. I've had it before.
