I Really Enjoyed This Family Saga

Memphis, as the tite would maybe suggest, is the main character in this book. As there is a polyphonic cast of characters.

This is the story of three generations of females in the North family.  The story starts in  the middle in the mid-90s and makes its way back through the 60s, when there was a colour bar in place, all the way 30s. The narrative ends in 2003.

The main themes of this book are race, violence, relationships, war, nherited trauma, and grief.

This is not an easy read, so check for trigger warnings if you feel as if there are a few.

I believe this is my first 5 / 5 of the year, and it is so well deserved.

It took me quite a bit of time to finish it because it was just so good, I wanted to take my time.

Memphis is about 3 generations of women of the North Family, based in - you guessed it - Memphis, Tennessee.

In this book you embark on a journey full of time-travel, immersing yourself in pivotal memories that resonate with triumphs, pride, anger, hurt, and love. A poignant portrayal of family, it serves as a compelling lesson on womanhood, discrimination, racism, and community.

The characters are brilliant, the scenery is so colorful and vivid it’s imprinted in my head. It’s a book full of life, and full of soul. It evoked a range of emotions, and worked my imagination in a way I hadn’t in a long time!

Thank you Tara for your writing skills, and for putting this book out!

PS: I don’t know if there is a movie made but they need to make one, please and thanks. Ok bye!

Empowering, healing, female centric with cozy desmiticy. But. I absolutely do not agree with one of the themes of this book. Aggressors, violence perpetrators do not get or need to be emphasised with, they do not get to tell their sad stories why they end up doing what they do. Women in this story had it bad, but they did not end up tormenting or abusing people. And yet somehow the only good man in this book ends up being a dead grandfather.
I loved this matriarchal family, it's dynamics, uhh, I loved it so much. There were also trauma, racism, abuse, and yet this is a healing story rather than just telling the reader about an open wound and deepening it more.

Memphis was poignant, engaging, and an insightful micro look at 3 matriarchal generations in North Memphis. Stringfellow did an amazing job drawing a clear picture of these characters' lives, struggles, triumphs, and connections. I couldn't put it down and am eagerly awaiting her next work.
