I completed reading this book in 4 days and believe me when I say this...I was dreaming about these characters in my sleep. I was in my imaginary Kabul and Herat. I love the relevance of certain aspects in the story...something mentioned at a point in this story will become relevant in the future. I loved Tariq. I loved how Mariam and Laila's stories mirror and contrast each other at the same time. It's an easy 5 stars for me. Thank you for coming this far into this review. I really hope you can feel the emotions the way I did if you pick it up. Do check TWs before reading. Thank you! Hope you have a great day.

3.5
I did cry while reading this book, but I was almost angry at the fact. Hosseini is praised for how raw he displays the suffering of generations of people in Afghanistan, especially women, but combined with the lack of real character depth, it feels like trauma porn for a western audience. I go back and forth on this opinion because their suffering deserves to be told in all the horror it was, but I can’t decide (and in the end it’s not up for me to decide) whether it’s honoring them or exploiting them.
So I didn’t enjoy it due to the immense pain I felt for the Mariam and Laila (and all the other women who suffered), however I couldn’t put it down either. A 3.5 it is.

This book contains lots of heavy themes and graphic descriptions, which are used to paint the lives and experiences of the main protagonists and those around them.
