This book was beautifully written, and a powerful expression of how war and the Taliban's regime in Kabul impacted two women with different backgrounds and hopes. The emotion and tragedy was captured with so much depth that I really wasn't sure I'd be able to finish this one.  It's a hard read but an important one.

Another beautiful and heartbreaking read from Khaled Hosseini.
I love this author and the way his powerful storytelling does it all; keeps you hooked, teaches you about the devastating history of Afghanistan, and feel a deep empathy and sadness for the characters.

[4.5 stars] “i dare allow myself to hope that you will knock on my door one more time and give me the chance to open it this time, to welcome you, to take you in my arms, my daughter as i should have done all those years ago but it is a hope as weak as my heart.”

I was expecting to love this, because this book found its way to me through a friend who went through similar things and told me to read it. I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. I hadn't read anything by Khaled Hosseini before and I was absolutely entranced by his ability to create three dimensional characters, to expose the reality of war without added shock value. It was humbling.
I will absolutely pick up something else by him and as someone who almost read exclusively from women and enby authors, this is not something I say lightly.

it was not regret any longer but a sensation of abundant peace that washed over her .. And yet she was leaving the world as a woman who had loved and been loved back .. She was leaving it as a friend, a companion, a guardian. A mother. A person of consequence at last ..
No .. It was not so bad .. Miriam thought, that she should die this way .. Not so bad .. This was a legitimate end to a life of illegitimate belongings ..

Khaled hosseini tries different things in this novel, but i think he failed to lead a multiple characters at a time. He tries to develop a story on emotions and he somehow did. But he tries to add some sexuality and that was not good enough I think. In the middle of the book he leave the min character behind thoroughly and introduce some new names that was disappointing. And I think the story must've been short.

It’s a gift to write a book on heartbreaking and challenging topics in a way that humanises such a horrific experience that is very real with stories often untold. A must read for all.
