An interesting, worthwhile exploration of the development of the image of Christ in the United States. The history is sometimes surprising and always compelling, certainly, but Blum's approach is often frustratingly broad, opting for sweeping, introductory sounding statements in the place of detailed examinations of images or ideas. I understand the presumed reasoning -- "the color of Christ" is a big, complex idea, and generalization must be made in a book that's more aimed at a popular than an academic audience -- but I consistently found myself wishing for greater detail and a more in-depth exploration.
