I really liked this book. It’s a bit like every zombie film out there, but there’s hope in this one which I like. I genuinely cared for all the characters, and I cried a lot.

It’s not the most mind blowing but I liked it enough to cry when sad things happened, which doesn’t happen with badly written books.

Sassafras and lullabies.

The back of the book has an NPR review that reads: "It is a terrible thing to read a Paul Tremblay story...terrible because you know, going in, that it's probably going to mess you up, that his stories and his words have this way of getting under your skin."
And boy does it deliver. I read an ARC of this and. It has haunted me for the last five years. It's a zombie apocalypse story. But the haunting thing isn't the zombies, it's what comes after.
I have no idea who's marking this as hopeful.
There is no hope. He makes certain of that. Were it not for that last chapter, it could have been hopeful, but that last chapter? He makes it clear. She moved back home with her parents--the one thing she never wanted to do--she gave up her own dreams and boundaries to raise that child, for years, and she has never been okay since then.

This was a superb mix of horror and emotion, a family drama set during the early days of a national disaster. I loved all the nods to zombie and apocalypse movies as well!
