In het boek “De Villa” worden we op sleeptouw genomen naar de oplossing van verschillende moorden in een huis dat de villa genoemd wordt. Gruwelijke misdaden die gepleegd zouden zijn door vier Rangers. Het leger wordt bij het onderzoek betrokken maar ondervind veel hinder van de plaatselijke autoriteiten. Een mysterie is geboren en aan Cook en zijn team omdat te ontrafelen.
Het boek leest lekker vlot weg. De hoofdstukken zijn kort en per hoofdstuk wordt aangegeven waar het zich afspeelt en uit welk perspectief het verteld wordt. Het komt allemaal heel beeldend over. Het spanningsgehalte is van het begin tot het einde van een prima gehalte. Het begin is dan ook meteen al heftig te noemen. Het verhaal is typerend voor het militaire gedrag , op sommige momenten komt het nogal macho over. Maar als je daardoor heen prikt, is dat iets waar je je als lezer niet hoeft te irriteren. Commando’s of Rangers zijn nu eenmaal uit een ander hout gesneden dan de doorsnee militair. In het boek wordt dat heel krachtig beschreven.
Samengevat : Wat lijkt op een open gemakkelijk op te lossen moordzaak tegen 4 Rangers leidt tot een mysterie dat een speciaal legeronderzoeksteam probeert op te lossen. Dit team gebruikt onorthodoxe middelen om de waarheid te ontdekken. Een boek wat je beet grijpt vanaf het begin en niet meer loslaat. Een boek dat gelezen mag worden.

This is fine, it's a good mystery and I liked the way the team worked together.
It's a thriller about a legal team that works with the Armed Forces to investigate crimes with more than just JAG lawyers and the usual Military Police. Also on the team are a Doctor and a Lawyer and it adds a bit of depth to the standard "Military Legal Thriller" genre.
I don't like the James Patterson Trademarked 1,000 Chapters Syndrome, where information that could be easily provided in a single chapter is split into 5 Chapters to create artificial suspense, but it didn't work against this book enough to diminish my enjoyment.
This also has the rare instance of giving the villains narration chapters so you have an understanding of what they're doing before it's all revealed in a Drawing Room Scene, which wouldn't really work in this particular novel, so it was a welcome variation.

It reads a bit like a Hollywood movie but is beautifully written with the crux of the mystery held off till the very end!

I feel like this could’ve been a lot shorter and it felt stretched out. The chapters flip back and forth between so many characters it can be hard to remember who’s who and it bogs the story down. It’s a pretty simple story but the way it’s told makes it feel like it’s trying to be more complex than it needs to be. 3 ⭐️
