It's a nice book if you like old literature and marine biology. It felt a bit streched through the description of the different kinds of sea life (there is a lot) and the ending was not that satisfying. But still there where interesting plotlines happening - fighting giant squids, discovering Atlantis, conquering the southpole and the mystery of captain Nemo of course.
Great book for everyone ready to learn a bit about old france, ohtdated science and of course: one of the best known science fiction books of all time. Jules Verne pretty much invented the genre.
Beware! It's an old book and it reads like one. Fortunately I had the translation by Victoria Blake, where some things are explained in the footnotes (old french calendar, Cachalots, old unit "League", ....).
By far the best chapter in this book is "Want of Air". This is the Chapter that really touched me since it's not just an enumeration of outdated science but a real story where every actor gets to his limits and beyond. This is the one moment where the Nautilus isn't this magic invincible super-vehicle.
Some parts read like a stretch.
The ending is not very satisfying.

Almost had to take away a star for the absolute slander against sperm whales. They did nothing wrong.

4.5 stars! Very easy read and the story is very engaging.
“Adieu sun! Disappear, thou radiant star! Rest beneath this free sea, and let a six months’ night spread its darkness over my new domain”.
was supposed to be a 5 star cause of the nameless conseil but the abrupt ending disappointed me a little. i was hoping in the ending, they give me even a tiny detail about captain nemo’s identity but i guess he is just an enigmatic man through n through and that’s fine. i would’ve loved to have read this during its time when deep-sea exploration was unknown, but i still enjoyed it and it’s probably one of the greatest adventure stories i’ve ever read.
