Boring. Slow. Not nearly as adventurous or exciting as you would hope. It could have been a fun romp, had the length of the book been reduced by 70%.

For those interested in the ocean and life contained within, this is a great read. Story is well written but slowed down by numerous paragraphs detailing the different classifications of animal and fauna, and coordinates of islands discovered by whom and when. You have to remember the main character is a scientist and such details are his life's work. This was written in a world that hadn't completely mapped out the world let alone discovered the North Pole or Antarctica

I love the sense of wonder about our natural world that this book conveys, I think we could use more of that in the current-day world. I don't live the killing of all the creatures they come across. It's not even that they don't realise that species might go extinct because it's explicitly mentioned, it's just that people didn't care about it back in the day.
