One of the original vampires, this reading is dark and romantic, it is very easy to get lost in the pages, imagining oneself trying to escape Dracula's castle with the main character.
-The gay undertones

I’ve been reading classic horror books back-to-back leading up to Halloween. Read Dracula right after Jekyll and Hyde!
Overall, glad I read this formative novel to understand how many of the vampire archetypes were cemented, however, I do think it was longer than it needed to be. The story really could have been told in half the time.
Appreciated how this was one of the first times in the time period that a strong female character played a leading, crucial role. They would not have tracked Dracula without Mina.
Shorter classic horror stories are more palatable for me. Moving onto Frankenstein and hopeful it’ll impress!

De momento, me he quedado algo decepcionada.

The dialouge is at times a bit too melodramatic and the relationships between the characters are a bit unrealistic. Everybody loves everybody, everybody is such great friends and they all just blindly follow Van Helsing even though he is basically a stranger to most of them and likes to keep them in the dark as to why they have to do certain things. There is no meaningfull conflict/disagreement between the characters that has to be overcome, which made the dynamic between them feel a bit absurd. Other than that this novel was perfect to me. The epistolary storytelling through multiple perspectives was perfectly executed, the plot unfolded at a nice pace which built a great natural tension and the ending was satisfying. Also "Dracula" was one of the most atmospheric novels I've ever read. Especially scenes like the first 4 chapters in Dracula's castle or the scene on the ship on it's way to Whitby, were an absolute masterclass in atmospheric horror storytelling.
Great classic, a must-read for any fan of the horror genre and probably also a worthwile experience for those who are not. Almost a 5 stars.

A very methodical book, almost scientific or mystery like (though the Central mystery, that Dracula is in fact a vampire, is no longer at all surprising). The horror is not always explicit, more about settings where characters enter into positions of control or loss of control. I recommend it, but it very much demands constant active attention throughout, so it can drag on
