I really enjoyed this book, esp. the last 100 pages.
I found the setting to be very well developed and very interesting, it was pivotal to the story and a really fun, vibrant setting!
I liked the characters individually and their own plot lines- I loved the family dynamics and the wealth of topics explored in a delicate but complete manner.
I really enjoyed the main characters and their respective family’s, and found them all to be compelling and I connected with them all.
I didn’t connect with the romance- it felt cringey and underdeveloped for me and I really just felt nothing for them.
But besides that and some minor cringey dialogue, I loved the story and the mystery! I loved the magic of the setting! I loved the setting of Salem in general (really well developed!) and characters and all their unique dynamics!

The book felt a bit hollow in all. I wasn’t a fan of Willow, but it wasn’t for any reason in particular. The romance was cute, but not impacting, and I didn’t find myself caring much at the climax. I did really love Mason, and I wish the book was in his perspective entirely. Willow’s character felt a bit empty. She had everything a character needs to be a character. Personality, Internal conflict, a fatal flaw, and wants and needs. But she didn’t seem to have much else. No other hobbies or quirks; she was very basic. She loved travel, but it was connected more to her feeling like she didn’t belong. This compared to Mason’s special interest level love of astronomy made it feel lackluster. Actually, as an autistic person, Mason was very relatable and easy to connect to (though I’m pretty sure that wasn’t intentional.)

Overall, I think this book tried to juggle a lot of things at once and ended up dropping it all. There was so much it felt like nothing.

I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, but I wouldn’t deter them from it either. I just don’t feel anything for it.

I'm struggling on what to rate this because overall I wasn't like offended by it but at the same time I feel like it was sort of weak.

More thoughts to come...

I had no idea what this book was about when I started it. I am not a fan of first person present tense. I am tired of teenagers and their drama. I was hoping for something overtly witchy with 'actual' magic. So I should not have liked this book.

Twist - I really liked this book! lol. It made me cry, thus the five stars. I couldn't put it down, and basically read it in a day (and a little bit the next morning). The characters and their motivations were well done and their relationship seemed organic. And now I really want to go to Salem.

A little bit cheesy but in a good way. Perfectly paced. Sad at the right times and happy at the right times.
