this a definitely a page turner, i read it in only three days, and definitely could have finished sooner if i cared too.

everything about the plot and dynamic between sqq and binghe is fucked up, but it’s given a much lighter weight due to the humor, self-awareness, and general satirical take by the narrative.

because this is one novel split over multiple volumes, the pacing is out of sorts. this rears it head especially in the ending, cutting off both anti- climatically and abruptly. however, considering the alternative is an about 1000 page book, i think it was ultimately the right choice.

all in all, i had a great time and if you’re into two solid red flags finding love, i’d recommend this series.

A metastory – or more specifically, transmigration – by MXTX was bound to be excellent and so far, it has not disappointed!

I found the main characters easy to love
  • Shen Qingqiu (Peerless Cucumber) with his 'anti' attitude toward the book and the author, always criticising the logic of events or naming within the novel, and always bantering with the system and his absolute (unconscious) weakness for Binghe
  • Luo Binghe being a real 'white lotus', remaining kind-hearted after all the abuse and pain he suffered in such a short life, even going beyond forgiving his Shizhun and completely devoting himself to him after only a couple shows of kindness (or plain human decency, to be honest)

This book touches on deep subjects like bullying, child abuse, socio-economic injustice, etc., in a way that – in my opinion – both acknowledges how important and terribly wrong they are, while still staying hilarious for the most part.

One thing that bothered me a lot was the sexism painted all over the novel portraying women – with a couple of exceptions – as weak and vain and in need to uphold absurd standards of purity and propriety lest they be undesirable to men... Which, unlike many of the things within the novel, did not strike me to be written in an ironic or mocking fashion, but rather in an unchecked internalised sexism kinda way.

I do wish, however, we'd gotten to see a bit more of
17-yo Luo Binghe before he was sent off to the Endless Abyss. Don't get me wrong, the bits we got from him as an older teen were great, seeing him being flirty and jealous was both funny and endearing, but we don't get much more information about his development beyond that, since the rest – being endlessly selfish, reliable, willing-to-put-his-whole-trust-and-devotion-on and in-need-of-the-approval-of Shen Qingqiu – we had already seen after the OOC was activated.

There's obviously the hint of a developing romance between the leads which could be disturbing for some as it's technically an adult/minor relationship, however, nothing of a sexual or romantic nature happens between them yet. This is really just setting the ground for what's to come, with the only signs of characters being conscious about this aspect coming from the minor (Luo Binghe) and not the adult.

First and foremost this novel is a parody of Chinese cultivation novels AND of millennial internet culture, so you should prepare yourself for both of those things going in.

As someone whose knowledge of cultivation novels is fairly limited to this author's three novels, though, I still found the novel very easy to follow. The millennial internet humor was relatable and funny, and even when things are brought up that are specific to Chinese internet culture, the footnotes do a good job of clarifying.

If you're into the fanfiction trope of isekai, this one is probably for you. If not, the premise of the novel is more or less "What happens when the characters of that really fan-service-driven, cliched story you love to hate stop being characters and start being people who actually have to deal with the hand they've been dealt? And oh yeah, you're dealing with it, too, because you're one of them. Except the Invisible Hand of God is railroading you onto the same plot, whether you want to go there or not."

Tone-wise his book is incredibly hilarious. So much so that it isn't until later that some of the sad or horrific aspects of the setting really sink in. There's definitely some fridge horror and some not-so-hidden horror alongside the overall light-hearted tone.

This series (? It was originally one novel in Chinese, but "series" seems the best term for how it's being published in English) does get fairly dark, although this volume ends at probably the lightest part of the story.  still, would-be-readers should be prepared for some dark topics to arise in the future. Definitely check the CW, and maybe google the CW for Scum Villian as a whole if you're worried. Without giving too much away, "cycles of abuse" ends up being a MAJOR theme in this series, so please make sure you're up for that before you start.

Additionally, I didn't see a CW that seemed to fit "constriction of choices", but be aware that's also a thing. Sometimes
the MC is completely unable to make certain choices under pain of punishment or death, even when the other options cause harm to him or people he cares for
.

The characters are great. Flawed, but you can't help but love them. I've read the whole novel/series once, and this specific volume once, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it both times. Again, I laughed so much while reading. But it also does a great job of stirring your other emotions, too! You really can't help but feel for the characters even while the meta text pokes fun at them and the genre conventions.
