This is not the first MXTX story I've read, but so far it is definitely my favorite. I really enjoyed how cucumber bro breaks the fourth wall while still indulging in some of the more well-known tropes in wuxia lit. I found myself laughing out loud more than once, so I'm excited to see how the second novel holds up. A well-deserved 4.25 ⭐ out of 5.

Not exactly a spoiler, but something to consider:

There is no 🌶 in volume one of SVSSS and I know a lot of people gravitate towards these novels because they're spicy. But nothing really "happens" until volume two.

Scum Villian’s Self Saving System (SVSSS) is an entertaining danmei1 that provides a meta-commentary on the Stallion2 genre. However, the readability of the English translation is brought down by simple translation mistakes and wording and sentence choices that are better suited to a direct Chinese translation than a smooth and comprehendible English translation.

Fucking love it!  The story is very amusing, but it still has some gore to it. Illustrations are stunning and translation is coherent! Character & name guide and glossary were very useful as well.

I actually started reading the novel even before the official translation came out. However, I didn't finish it. I had stopped somewhere in the middle. The novel didn't intrigued me as much as MDZS had (I've read it before reading SVSSS and my heart still belongs to Wangxian). However in this break I had learned the crucial piece of information: MXTX wrote this for her own amusement. Her work should not be take (to) seriously. With this I could finally enjoy SVSSS and I LOVED it.

The main character's humor, choice of words, and general attitude are hilarious. The story in general follows a rather light-hearted tone, so when it does reach a low, it's a sharp contrast to the humor. There isn't much I can say without spoiling the whole premise, but—it's definitely a self-indulgent story. If you want to have a little fun, get invested in a story and some characters, then svsss is definitely worth a shot.

I read the entire novel when it was just an unofficial fan-translation, and words can't express how excited I am for an official one! This first volume sets up for the rest mostly by establishing relationships, giving the reader a feel for our main character's unreliable, hilarious narration, and by ending after a rather momentous (read: tragic) plot point ! 

Simply put: Scum Villain vol1 is a wonderfully fun read about a chronically online dude who dies & becomes the antagonist in his favorite book to hate-read. Shen Yuan/Qingqiu is a stupidly charming and charmingly stupid protag, and Luo Binghe is just perfect... He's never done anything wrong ever actually ( ꈍᴗꈍ) Don't be fooled by the lighthearted tone though-- next volume's gonna be SAD 💔

The CA happened in the past, and is never inflicted on the child again in the course of the novel/nor was it ever inflicted by the protagonist. A few scenes of bullying also occur, as well as descriptions of past bullying. The homophobia's very light-- mostly a few thoughts/jokes by an incredibly repressed 'straight' man. The sexist/misogynistic comments aren't too bad either, many are simply jabs at harem/stallion novel tropes, and are often called out for being ridiculous.
