This is not the first MXTX story I've read, but so far it is definitely my favorite. I really enjoyed how cucumber bro breaks the fourth wall while still indulging in some of the more well-known tropes in wuxia lit. I found myself laughing out loud more than once, so I'm excited to see how the second novel holds up. A well-deserved 4.25 ⭐ out of 5.

Not exactly a spoiler, but something to consider:
There is no 🌶 in volume one of SVSSS and I know a lot of people gravitate towards these novels because they're spicy. But nothing really "happens" until volume two.

this was just as exciting the second time around as it was the first :’) so much of the world and the characters felt more alive seeing them through shen yuan’s eyes; such an avid critic of this story he’s been transported into, but also one of its biggest supporters when it comes to how much potential PIDW has.

shen yuan/shen qingqiu’s narration adds so much charm in his sarcasm, but he’s also really diligent and takes this approach to these quests he’s meant to solve that are really compelling.

the second volume is the one filled with the most angst, and it’s also my most favorite of the series, so i’m half-anticipating / half-dreading watching that diligence he takes to these quests unravel in the face of luo binghe, who deviates from the story more than sqq will expect. gah it’s all so exciting!!

I love this series largely due to the engaging writing style, but the events and characters are somewhat akin to watching a trainwreck, especially in later books. Not due to a failing on the authors part, but in large part due to the
insane and obsessive second lead.

I'm definitely conflating the show with the book; having seen the show on youtube, I already knew some of the plot and could enjoy it. As a translation, though, it was sometimes hard for me to parse the rhythm and tone, as it was written with another language in mind (duh). The translators notes were present and helpful. The plot is wicked mean and often funny, if not tragic. The point of view character is, with all my affection, an idiot. He's also very smart, but those two things are not without one another. Yes, it's worth getting into this series. I'm about to sucker myself into buying a set, as my library doesn't have more than the first and the fifth book. Ugh. I would read it again, and I recommend this translation and format for anyone who struggled to get into this series when it was only translated illegally online.
