The first book of the Captive Prince series is by far the weakest one. It’s focus is primarily on the world building aspect and the pace is very slow at the beginning. It took some time and effort to get to the end. The ending ended up being good and i left me wanting more.

You know, at first I was like: "why am I reading this torture porn that reads a bit like early seasons of Game of Thrones?" but something kept me going despite the torture and pain and angst AND I'M SO GLAD I DID KEEP GOING.
I adore this entire series. It brings Song of Achilles to mind at times. It's really well written and well plotted and well characterized, and if you don't let yourself be put off by the first half that is bleak and has very disturbing things happen in it, you will be rewarded with a story that grabs your heart, squeezes it, keeps squeezing and then gives you an absolutely delightful catharsis.
