So many feels!

I adore Jono and Patrick and this book made me love them more! Seeing how they bounce off each other and support one another as their love continues to grow makes me so happy!

I am surprised at how gripped I continue to be by the werewolf pack subplot. I suppose the emphasis on interpersonal politics is more compelling to me than grand world domination plans.

The series continues to put the usual suspects on the side of Evil. This time around, with the Norse gods, it includes Loki. While it’s not done poorly, it’s still cliche and eyeroll inducing.

This book also does something similar to the previous one by giving away a crucial plot element early on and then acting like it’s new information later on. Here we learn that
Lucien will only bargain with Jono if Jono’s pack will pray to Ashanti, with a super heavy emphasis that more people praying for her may bring her back to life. And yet, after the climactic battle where Odin “dies” and is revealed to still be alive, I’m supposed to be surprised? I can see why Patrick treats this moment with the gravity of dead gods—ie Ashanti—being dead forever. But Jono, who made the deal with Lucien and whose POV we’re in for the funeral, doesn’t correct this assumption at any point.
At least it’s not as egregious as the previous book.

In terms of sex scenes, I was thrown off when the story didn’t end on one. That’s been the formula for the last three books, after all. But then I recalled there was a sex scene mid-story, so now my current theory is the formula is actually just two sex scenes per book. Technically the predictability is annoying, but in the general scope of story pacing, it doesn’t break the flow.

I continue to be enraptured by where the story will go next.

As always I feel like I understand about 30% of what is going on in these books and love every second of it 😅 Can't wait to read the next one, I don't know what I'm going to do when it's time to leave Patrick and Jono behind 😩

In my review of the previous book I wondered whether future releases would continue to share the same structure since it felt a bit repetitive at times and to past me I say: No!
It thankfully didn't which was refreshing and frankly unexpected.
That being said at the end of the day it is still the same universe and characters so we are going to keep
dealing with new gods and more pack issues but because of the shift in execution it didn't feel as repetitive as it has in the past.
All in all it was a good one, enjoyed the fights, mysteries and relationship developments.

Patrick and Jono's story continues in A VIGIL IN THE MOURNING with a focus on the Norse gods. A case for the SOA pulls Patrick away to Chicago while Jono stays behind to handle territory disputes with the other New York City god pack. I was worried they would be apart for a lot of the book but it wasn't bad at all and I loved seeing them reunited when Jono goes to Chicago. Of course things get a bit rocky when Jono has to reveal the alliance he made while Patrick was gone. But even with their fighting their love was clear and you know they'll be solid and come out the other end stronger.

There was tons of action, per usual, and things are really heating up in the fight to control the NYC packs. I can't wait to see Estelle and Yossef get what they deserve! I do hope in future books that we start to see more of Wade's personality besides him always being hungry.

“We’re in this together, and I’m always going to trust you. That’s never going to change, love,” Jono said quietly before pressing a gentle kiss to the corner of Patrick’s mouth.

“Long way from London.”

Patrick leaned forward, resting both hands on Jono’s knees. “Do you miss it?”

Jono looked down into the face of the man he loved, the man he’d move every heaven and every hell for, and shook his head. “Not when I have you.”

I wish we knew Wade as more than just a hungry pickpocket - he is getting to be a caricature instead of a character.

Ugh

Said this before and will say it again this series gets better with each and every addition!
Frigging Norse gods are even more of a pain than was expecting them to be. Patrick is taken to Chicago for work, and when his past once again catches up with him, he calls Jono in for help (see growth). Meanwhile, back in New York, Jono is having trouble with his own poor decisions are made that will affect all of the God pack. The tale becomes more and more entwined with each book with a peaceful ending, not in sight yet. And for one, I can't wait to keep going to see if and when they do find it.

The narrator is still fabulous. I love the way he narrates the banter between the pack mates.

I enjoyed that Patrick & Jono spent a bit of time away from each other in this one, It gave them a chance to function on their own with out the help of the other. Patrick did call Jono when he realised that he wasn’t going to be strong enough on his own to handle the issues in Chicago.

The gods in all of the series are pretty self centred but I found the Norse gods here pretty unlikeable, which kills me as the Norse gods are some of the ones I’m the most familiar with. I do love the Valkyries though

Wade is yet again fabulous comic relief.
