This book had me chuckling throughout. The characters humour filled me with joy and I believe a book that shares such challenging life experiences and can still express such lightness, is executed tremendously well. Barry and Morris are wonderful characters and it filled me with a sadness that they were unable to spend their lives together and honour their truth. We all deserved that!

I felt a real mix of emotions and empathy for all the family members involved, although I did find Barry’s daughter a little annoying. Can’t love everyone, right.

I absolutely love the cover. It oozes the personality of Barry and was what initially attracted me. I’m so pleased that I picked this up!

I have read another of this authors books and I much preferred this book and would highly recommend it. I give this book 4.75 stars.

I’ve been wanting to read more Bernadine Evaristo ever since I read Girl, Woman, Other. I finally read one of her earlier works, Mr. Loverman, and wow, it was so different from Girl, Woman, Other! Her talent is truly limitless.

Mr. Loverman was such a joy to read. Even though the characters dealt with heavy topics - homophobia, marriage, divorce, adultery, aging, regret - the narrator, Barry, is so charming through it all. I was 100% engaged in the plight of a 74-year-old Antiguan-born gentleman, in love with his childhood sweetheart, burdened by cultural expectations, and coming to terms with his true self and his changing relationships.
