Barrington is flawed - the way he talks about his wife and women in his life is nasty - but he is nonetheless likeable, charismatic, funny!

I laughed aloud at this, Barrington speaks as you might to a friend. And it's emotionally intimate as Barrington lets us in on his big secrets.

I enjoyed it a lot, and the narration is great. Looking forward to the TV series.

At times heartbreaking, other times humorous. Flawed characters with traumas and secrets just trying to make each other comfortable. I thought Barry's misogyny was terribly grating but, maybe was another example of him being the product of his repression. As Morris does call it out (but at the end of the book).

Mixed feelings. The writing itself is brilliant, Evatisto has a talent for comedy. However, our main character hates women and it shows. It was frustrating to read and hard to like him with such outdated, nasty views of the women in his life. The last hundred pages saved the book for me. At least at that point Barry
starts to understand he's in the wrong and Carmel gets her life back
. My rating is mostly for the quality of writing, not for the main character who I think we're supposed to like.
