While told often through metaphor, there is much insight into pregnancy, motherhood, and fear surrounding child death. There are also brief, metaphorical descriptions of childbirth. It is highly implied that children die in the story (

Baer describes losing a child of her own and the text possibly alludes to miscarriage/stillbirth

). There are also overall discussions of misogyny in wider society, as well as an instance of implied SA

in a poem which describes a man possibly drugging and then sleeping with a woman (consent is dubious/non-existent)

This is the kind of poetry that I love. Baer has a great balance of beautiful prose and accessible language. I was able to read a poem and reflect on without feeling like I needed to years of English Lit classes to understand it. Her writing is extremely relatable to anyone who has lived the female experience. I highly recommend it!
