More of a 3.5 star.
I’ve had this partially finished for years because I was using it for school and like everything else I read for school years ago I never actually got around to finishing it.
This time, I listened to the audiobook and I enjoyed it. I thought it was good! It wasn’t an all time favorite but it also just hasn’t completely stuck with me.
Janie went through a lot of crap within her life. She was surrounded in relationships that stopped her from experiencing life for most of her life.
I like the comment that she lived her elder years first and then her young years are for now once she was older and out of those situations. Soo much happened and went down by the end and man.
I liked it, but just I feel like it hasn’t fully stuck with me as much as would’ve been nice. Really glad that I finally read and finished this though!

I find it hard to read when the accents are written out so it took a bit longer to read and understand
I actually really loved the characters and the story, but dnf for a reason that’s definitely trivial to some people but is like particularly screechy nails on a chalkboard to me: The characters’ speech is spelled out phonetically. I dnf Dolores Claiborne, waaaaay back in the 90s, for the same reason. No, I’m not equating ZNH with SK. I’m stating the fact that the speech is all written phonetically and it drives me crazy. I don’t need regional accents spelled out - those who do? Definitely read this book! The story is fantastic, if hard to read, content-wise, at times.
I hate not finishing books. This is the third book I ever dnf on my 50 years of life and if ZNH can get this message -I’m sorry my brain sucks and I wouldn’t finish your excellent book. 😭

Returning to something that I read in high school. I was really struck by this passage this time: “He could be a bee to a blossom-a pear tree blossom in the spring. He seemed to be crushing scent out of the world with his footsteps. Crushing aromatic herbs with every step he took. Spices hung about him. He was a glance from God” (pg. 101).
The colloquial spelling was off-putting to me for awhile. I started and put it off repeatedly in the past. But once I tried to read while moving my lips along ( pace Nabokov's dictum that only fools and children do that) it was easy. And, wow, the language is amazing. As love stories go, it's one of the best i've ever read.
