Another absolute banger! So far the city watch arc doesn’t disappoint. The plot was somewhat more straightforward than the previous two, at least to me.

I just love the Vimes books. I think it's my all time favourite series. I laugh every damn time, and some of these I've reread many times over the decades. and they just say good

quite a slow start and not as funny off the bat as the first 2 watch books, but pretty good once it got going! i love how everything built to such a catastrophic, satisfying crescendo at the end, and the cast of characters was (as is typical of pratchett) hilarious and endearing and full of dialogue that made you laugh and ponder IRL society in a single paragraph. i especially loved angua and cheri's relationship as it deepened throughout the book
especially their conversations about werewolves (with angua's great tongue-in-cheek allusions to her own werewolf-ness) and the scene where they go to a bar for the unalive and differently-alive. as always, the discworld books do a fascinating job of drawing parallels between fantastical creatures/ideas and real-world social issues!
vines was also a riot as per usual, though i was hoping to see more of sybil and her dragons! i also loved the ending involving
dorfl the newly-freed golem taking an interest in religious philosophy and looking to debate the existence of god with overtly-theistic priests.
excited to read more discworld now that i have the full compendium in ebook format! thank you humble bundle books!

I continue to be obsessed with the Watch.

this book was INCREDIBLE but at the end of the day it's still a Watch book and the Watch are COPS. So occasionally reading this book felt like eating your vegetables. It's so hard for me to reconcile the fact that I LOVE these characters and also realise that they're an idealised version of something that shouldn't exist. Like most of them aren't even very idealised. You can also kind of feel sir Terry grappling with that as well. Unfortunately there are a handful of police brutality jokes that just don't land. Not sure if they landed in 1996 but they certainly didn't land in 2025.

Okay that being said I know I'm not the first or the last to comment on this but CHERI LITTLEBOTTOM THE WOMAN (DWARF) YOU ARE. I don't understand how there can be a debate on whether or not sir Terry Meant for this to be a trans narrative because it was SO DEFTLY HANDLED. HE GOT IT. You can't LUCK into one of the most sympathetic and well handled trans narratives STILL LIKE THIRTY YEARS LATER. She's the moment! She's leading a revolution! She handed Angua a sheet of paper with possible names on it for gods sake! I'll cry again. Sir Terry the world is worse without you.

The golems in this book. I cannot even speak on it. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. WORDS IN THE HEART CANNOT BE TAKEN AWAY. God. The way I sobbed.

And lastly because of the person I am. The Vimes/Vetinari in this book. Chef's kiss. If Vimes didn't exist Vetinari would have to invent him. That's gay as hell man ngl. The old man yaoi is strong in this one.
