I went into the bookshop looking for a gritty police story, and found this, which fits the bill admirably (I know, a bad Pune). The business about the wallpaper 'poisoning' the Patrician is a nice red herring for those who know there's a theory that Napoleon died of arsenic poisoning because of his wallpaper (though is it ever good for an author to toss red herrings to the audience?) I thought this story was dead good, so there.

It's no wonder I need to limit myself on my Pratchett. It seems no time at all between starting and completing the book. The third of the Watch books is a joy to dive into. The Watch is second only to the Witches on my list of favourite characters to follow. (Death ranks 3rd, but please don't tell him that.) Feet of Clay takes on the mythology of the Golem from Jewish folklore and we get more Carrot! More Vimes! More Vetinari! Honestly, what more could you ask for?

The City Watch novels continue to be a really good time. There are so many things about this novel in particular that I enjoyed: Mr Pratchett's extensive word play, the existential questions raised by the existence of Golems (when is a person a person? What exactly does "alive" mean, especially in a world that has the catergory "undead"?), more female characters in the Watch, a mystery that took a very long time to untangle. Cheri Littlebottom is one of my new favourite characters, I hope she sticks around for a while.
While I loved that the golem Dorfl got his voice and his freedom in the end, I am skeptical about him being made a member of the Watch. I understand that that is a great way to keep him around as a relevant character, but I feel like his realisation of personhood and personal freedom is kind of undermined by him then being made a servant of the city and the law. Technically, he now has a master again (though he would probably argue that he knows he doesn't have to follow orders but only does so because he wants to). And there is a discussion to be had about the portrayal of police who try to stick to the rules, but will totally break them if they are sure they are targeting the bad guy, i.e. the purpose excuses the methods and such. But that is an issue most media portrayals of police have, so I'm interested to see if this discussion comes up in future books.

Im falling back in love with Pratchett. His characters and stories will most likely stay with me until I die.
