I would give it 6 stars if I could. A whimsical story with loveable characters and just the right amount of drama. The illustrations are beautiful too!

My son found this story of a young girl who tries to fill in for her mother picking tea to be emotionally gripping. Good for older preschoolers and young grade school students.

This was such a surprise. What a charming fantasy that takes place in China. Would be a perfect read aloud for middle school

This was a short, easy read. I expected a little more conflict but it was a beautiful story--style based on a folktale. Main character is a girl whose mother gets sick and can't pick tea and earn $ for the 2 of them, so the little girl goes to the tea plantation to try to pick tea. She's too small to pick the best tea, so she stops for a little while and tells her story to the monkeys who she shares her lunch with each day. They take her mother's tea basket away, and she thinks they've stolen it, but they haven't--they've taken it into the mountains and picked the best tea in the world--cloud tea. That same day, the royal tea taster comes to taste the tea and discovers the tea in the little girl's basket. This leads to riches, and once a year he comes back to get more cloud tea from the girl. And she and her mother never work again. A nice morality tale about kindness leading to kindness but not much more than that. And beautiful illustrations.

I love Mal Peet. This caught my eye - tea, monkeys, the GORGEOUS illustration on the cover. This would be a good story to adapt for storytelling - there's great possibility with the monkeys, the women who won't look, the Royal Tea Taster and his tea tasting faces.
