As someone in quite a similar situation (I'm an NZ girl with a French partner) I can testify as to the truthfulness of her account - it was nice to see expressed in words what I felt at times during my first months in France! Only disappointment was that the 'love story' aspect was not expanded upon at all. I was left wondering how a relationship that seemed to start on little more than a whim evolved into obviously a very succesful and loving partnership spanning two cultures.

The fact that I immediately grabbed my pen and sticky notes after the first chapter ended just shows how this memoir hooked me on the spot! It's not just being fully immersed, setting and atmosphere-wise, but to delve in-depth about the Parisiennes' culture and identity in such easily understandable narratives is *french-kisses* (that is intended).

Early on I was afraid my comment here was going to be Almost Good. The story is irresistible to me with the author moving to Paris, but it took a little while to feel like you were in the author's story. Her observations are good and really unlike similar stories I've read. You feel like you are getting the real take of a foreigner moving to France.

Unfortunately I felt like her stories went on a little too long. A good editor could have helped shape that a bit more. I also found the story flipped from present to past quite often - when we know all of it is in the past.

I have no doubt that I would enjoy hanging out with the author. I felt a definite kinship, even though she is from Australia and I'm American. I wonder how this story would be written (and maybe will be written) with more time and distance.

Not your typical cliché book about moving to Paris. The author not only thoroughly explains how French culture is different but why. The author writes about her first few years in Paris in the 90s but it is still a super insightful book in the present day.

I finished this on the flight to Paris... perfect timing to learn such lessons as "don't bother being as friendly as you would at home... Parisians will think you are tacky," "don't wear schlumpy clothes out of respect for those around you and your role in the postcard of Paris," and "as an Anglo-Saxon, know you'll want to drink twice as much as the French will be drinking."

Sarah Turnbull did the typical Aussie tour around Europe in her mid-twenties, met a Parisian, and stayed. Almost French is an entertaining look at how an expat found her place a la belle France.

Cute! An Australian woman travels to France to spend time with a man she just met, and ends up staying.
