If I'm not impressed by the start of a series, I always try to give the second book a chance. If I still feel the same, I abandon the story and never bother with it again.
I have to admit that the only reason I read this is because I like Kagawa's writing and always come back for more, just because she has written two amazing books.
So, for the 50th time, go read [b:The Immortal Rules|10215349|The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1)|Julie Kagawa|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1323357921s/10215349.jpg|15114912] instead. The second book in the trilogy is her best work in my opinion and has a spot in my favorites. It's fast-paced, there are wicked, creepy vampires and the plot is amazing.

This on the other hand is just so... bland and formulaic. The characters are stiff, the world-building is basic and the plot couldn't excite me less. It reads like someone's debut novel, which is a huge disappointment as this is my 6th book by Kagawa.
Also I have a bad feeling the love triangle will steal the spotlight later on, and I've read enough books to see how that goes; straight to hell.

I wrote a long review for Talon and had the exact same problems with this book.
You can read it here.
I have also reviewed The iron king and The immortal rules.

I feel like the first book in this series left me really conflicted. On the one hand, I like the story, on the other I didn't really like the characters. And I feel the same about this one. The story is great, I love it. But at the same time I kind of hate Ember, and everything seems to be about her. Maybe I hate her because she's a pretty accurately portrayed 16 year old. Or maybe I hate her because she's just not a great character. I feel like the only character I really like is Garrett and maybe even Dante.

I'm just generally conflicted about how I feel. I wish there was less emphasis on the weird love triangle aspect. I think Riley is a good character, but a waste of space. He and Ember have zero chemistry. In fact I don't really think she has chemistry with Garrett either, I would be happy if they each found someone else to fawn after. But that might be hard, given that the only other female characters in the story are conniving bitches or ruthless killers.

Maybe I can hope for Ember to grow up, Riley to find a girl his own age (weirdo), Garrett to find something that makes him happy, and Dante to find a way out before he's too far gone. We'll see where the story goes.

Julie Kagawa is my favourite author! I like this book more than the first book.[bc:Talon|17331828|Talon (Talon, #1)|Julie Kagawa|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1397581124s/17331828.jpg|24035257] It's thrilling and full of romance and drama. I can't wait to read soldier![bc:Soldier|17342750|Soldier (Talon, #3)|Julie Kagawa|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1446884784s/17342750.jpg|27251870]

More active than the first one. Corruption, advanced science, dragons, love triangle, and action packed.
