I did not think I'd enjoy this book, based on the synopsis. And if it weren't for book club, there's a strong possibility I would never, ever, have read this wonderful story.

The writing was so layered and strong... It took me right to the places and time in an effortless manner that's inherent to books which aren't just easy reading, but also the most enjoyable.

If I hadn't somewhat recently spent time in New Orleans or had a son of my own, I wonder if I'd experienced the same level of empathy for the characters... But as it was, this was one of the best books I've read in a while. (Always helps when it's a vacation read too).

This book inspired me to create a new shelf for books worth another read. If that's not an endorsement, I don't know what is.
