I don't know, I guess I'm just not a big RA Salvatore fan. I've been on a D&D kick lately, and have become a huge fan of clerics, so I thought a novel about a cleric would be fun. But, I just found it pretty dull. Cadderly, the clever cleric who lives in a library and is constantly working to make new inventions just wasn't a fun character to me, and his exploits to stop his library from falling into chaos from an evil wizard just never felt like the story got going. It has fun elements, and as a big old fantasy dork I still had a fine time, just nothing special.

As both a player and a fan of dungeons & dragons, I am obviously biased.

However, it must be said that I was pleasantly surprised with both the writing and the plot.

Part of a series, will need to read the next part.

I really liked the parts of this book that were not about the main character...i wanted him to die...hated him. I really did not like his Danica either...when she smashed her face against the rock i was glad. I really liked the druids and the imp though. oh and the mummy...mummies are always good.

Canticle is a good story in a good setting. It tells the tale of Cadderly, a young boy priest, and his endeavors to right the injustices he experiences. Canticle is not mind-blowing. Canticle is not awe-inspiring. Canticle is interesting and worth a read.

I really enjoyed the fact that the story is set in an institution of learning (The Eidificant Library) where we could explore ideas that are at the forefront of the realm's technology, yet it was not presented in a mundane fashion.
